Upright to 2 feet. Stem solitary.

Flower: to 1 1/8 in long, 5 pale blue to violet petals, united for much of length. 2-lipped. Upper lip short, not lobed, Lower lip larger, 3- lobed. Flowers in whorls around stem, forming interrupted terminal spikelike raceme.

Leaves: To 8 in long, mostly in basal rosette. Blade of basal leaves entire to deeply cut, or lobed, with terminal lobe largest. Stem leaves opposite, or 1-2 paires, small stalkless. Winter leaves hairy, often purple tinged.
