4-5 petals, tiny tubular flowers in clusters

Upright to sprawling, smooth annual. Stems sheathed at swollen joints.

Flower: To 1/8 in, 4-5 petallike sepals, rose to pale pink with anchor-shaped veins near tip. Petals absent Leaves: 2-12 in, wide, alternate, stalked, longpointed on both ends.

Moist or muddy soils, or in shallow water.
