Composite with overlapping phyllaries (bracts)

Upright to widely sprawling, smooth annual. To 40 in. Stems one to several, often zigzag, much branched. Branches wiry, dark green or purple.

Flower: Head to 5/8 inch. 20-30 white to purplish ray flowers, Disc flowers yellow. Heads solitary on ends of numerous short branches.

Leaves: To 4 inch long and 5/16 in wide. Alternate, narrow. Upper leaves smaller.

Commonly called Blackweed because of dark stems/branches.
