Upright, slender perennial to 16 in. from clustered, tuberous-thickened roots or stolons. Flowering stem solitary. Plants form colonies from underground stolons.

Flowers 6 petal like white segments, upper 5 segments rather narrow, extending forward. Lower segment or lip largest, yellow-green in center, often thickened and down curved at tip, the margins wavy or crinkled Flowers numerous, often up to 60, congested in a 2-4 spiral rows in terminal spikes.

Leaves To 4 inch long and 3/4 inch wide. Thicken. Lower leaves in basal rosette, withered away by flowering time. Upper leaves greatly reduced, sometimes becomng only sheathing bracts.
