Stiffly upright perennial to 7.5 feet, usuallly much lower. Stem woody at base. Leafless for most of year. Occasionally spiny, especially near base. Usually much-branched. Plants often form extensive colonies.

Flower: Head to 1/2 inch across Ray flowers white. Disk flowers yellow.

Leaves very small, smooth, dropping from branches early and usually absent.

Excellent plant for erosion control. It can be started by root division, is hardy and multiples rapidly.
