Scientific Name Agalinis purpurea

5 petaled, 2 lipped corollas

Upright to sprawling. Up to 4 feet but usually much shorter. Stem solitary at base but extensively branched in upper part. Branches slender, wide-spreading and wiry.

Flower 2-3 cm long. Petals 5, reddish purple to pale pink. Usually lined with yellow and spotted with purple. United short tubular with 5 unequal flaring lobes at rim. Flowers from upper leave axils.

Leaves to 4 cm long to 8 mm wide. Opposite. Stalkless. Occasionally with clusters of tiny leaves in axils.

The flowers are frequently visted by various insects, especially bees and butterflys. The plant is a major food source of the fall broods of the buckeye butterfly larva.
