Pealike Flowers
Upright perenial 2-10 ft. Stems from woody base, usually much branched in upper portion. Branches thin, widely spreading. Plant dies back to ground level every winter.
Flower To 1/2 inch, five orange-yellow petals, often lined with red. The banner upright and longer than other petals. Flowers few to several, long stalked, loosely clustered in elongated raceme from leaf axils.
Leaves 4-8 inch, alternate, shortstalked, the blade once divided into 20-25 segments or leaflets. Leaflets mostly 1/2 to 1 1/4 inch long about 1/4 inch wide.
Fruit is a large, conspicuously four-sided pod containing several seeds reportedly toxic to livestock. When the pods become mature and dry, the seeds loosen and rattle inside if the plant is moved. |
