5 united petals; 2 - lipped flowers
Twin pairs of large, lavender to purplish, 2-lipped, tubular flowers, well above the leafy stem. Flowers open after sunrise, lasting only one day.
Leaves opposite, oval to lancelike, with petioles 10-70 cm. Plant is densely haiy when young, becoming almost entirely smooth with age.
Although called wild petunia, they are not in nightshade family from which true cultivated petunias are derived.
