Upright to sprawling, usually clump-forming hairy perennial to 3 ft (90 cm); stem often branched in upper portion. Plant contains watery juice, not the milky sap of other Asclepias species.

Flower to 1.3 cm across; petals 5, orange to orange-red or occasionallly yellow, united basally, reflexed or curved downward; hoods 5, orange or yellowish, erect; horns slightly lower than hood, incurved. Flowers numerous and forming rounded terminal clusters.

Leaves to12 cm long to 3.2 cm wide, alternate, numerous, somewhat crowded, rounded to sharppointed at tip; margins wavy or sometimes rolled to lower surface.
