This flower get it's name from it's resemblance to a Tukish fez.

The broad, red petals remain closely wrapped around each other at the base. The stamens extend beyond the petals. The flowers, up to 1.5 inches in length, grow singly in the leaf axils, or sometimes in clusters at the ends of the stems.

The stems are erect, woody, and widely branched. Leaves are alternate with stems 1.5 to 4 inches in length. The leave are 3-5 inches long with 3 shallow lobes, coarse hair above, and a velvety underside. The margins have shallow, rounded teeth. The plant grows 2.5 to 3.5 feet tall.

There is a red, apple-like fruit approximately 1.0 inch wide and 0.5 inch tall. It ripens in late sumer or early fall after the blossomes dissappear.
