Upright, stout, coarse, annual 30-100 cm, stem solitary, ridged or grooved, branching in upper portion.

Flower head to 5 mm across; ray flowers 5 white, broad but very short and hardly noticable ;disk flowers numerous, whitish. Heads numerous, forming large, wide-spreading terminal clusters.

Leaves 10-20 cm long, alternate, the blade thin, soft, deeply lobed or divided into numerous segments. Early leaves form basal rosette.

Tiny flowers produce an abundance of pollen that is distributed by the wind, making this a major hay-fever plant. The plant also contains chemical substances that can cause serious dermatitis in some individuals.
