Upright, stout, very rough-hairy annual to 3m or more. Stem solitary, much-branched, often mottled, sticky to the touch.

Flower head to 15 cm accross. Ray flowers 20-25, yellow. Disc flowers numerous, red or purple. Heads solitary, terminal on long, rough stalks.

Leaves to 30 cm long, almost all alternate, long stalked, rough, blade conspicuously 3-veined at base, the margins toothed. Upper leaves usually smaller.
