Upright weedy annual. Strongly scented plant.
Flower: Small and inconspicuous closely packed clusters of male and female flowers at the tips of branches. Male flowers are located above their female counterparts.
Leaves: Stalked, alternate on branching stems. Appear grayish green because of dense covering of white stellate hairs.
Named probably from Greek kroton , meaning tick, possibly referring to shape of seeds.
At least twenty different Croton species in the Houston area. Specific identification is difficult. Croton capitatus is the most common species.
