Upright to 3 ft. Stems solitary, branched in upper portion. May form extensive colonies.

Flower: Head to 9/16 in. across. Ray flowers absent. 3-5 dark lavender to lilac, deeply 5-lobed disk flowers. Flowers fit together like sections of a pie - when combined together appear like a single flower. Each cluster subtended by three leaf-life bracts.

Leaves: A basal rosette of leaves - normally withering before flowering. Upper smaller leaves are alternate and oval, tapering at the base to short stalks. Margins toothed.
