Scientific Name Silphium gracile

Composite

Upright to 6 feet tall. Sparingly branched in upper portion.

Flower: Head to 3 in. across. 16-20 yellow ray flowers. Numerous yellow disc flowers. Heads solitary, few, terminal at ends of leafless stalks of irregular lengths.

Leaves: To 6 in. long. Coarse-textured and rough to touch. Lower leaves opposite, usually coarsely toothed. Upper leaves becoming alternate, fewer, smaller, the margins entire.

Sap
The common name comes from the sticky sap secreted along the stems and leavs. Has been used as chewing gum.
