8-20 in. tall wih gray-green stems.
Flower: 1-2 in. across five violet to red-violet (occasionally white) petals, cup shaped at first opening out nearly flat as flower matures. Stamens and pistil form a conelike structure in the center of the flower.
Leaves:Alternate, but few leaves on upper part. Basal leaves have stems almost as long as the leaf. Coarsely lobed or scalloped to deeply divided into five lobes.
