Shrub to small tree up to 30 ft tall. One of the earliest shrubs to bloom in the spring. Flower: Buds are red, but flowers are actually pinkish-purple. Five petals approx 1/4 long, with 10 short stamens. Flowers grow in clusters and appear before leaves. Flowers may grow from main truck and large leaves in weakened plant.
