Low, upright, unbranched hairy perenial (4 - 16 in) when flowering or fruiting. Stem solitary from small tuber without rhizomes or stolons.

Flower: To 1 5/8 in across. Sepals 10-20, petallike, usually white, occasionally pink, violet or blue. Flowers solitary at tip of long stalk arising from root, opening wide in full sun, closing in evening or on cloudy days. Flowering stalks densely hairy along entire length.

Leaves: Mostly at base, stalked, usually purplish on lower surface. Blade divided into 3 leaflets with each leaflet toothed or shallowly cut.

One of the earliest spring flowers.

Fruiting head
Fruiting head begins elongated even before petals fall, becoming as much as 3 in.

A whorl of 3 leaves occurs about halfway up the stem, with each leaf cut or divided in narrow segments.
